VIET NAM’S WATER PUPPETRY
From April 13 to October 13, 2025
Experience Vietnamese water puppetry and traditional music at the Viet Nam Pavilion
Water puppetry is a traditional form of folk theater deeply rooted in Viet Nam’s wet rice civilization, where people have long lived in harmony with nature, rice fields, and waterways. Originating over a thousand years ago in the Red River Delta of Northern Viet Nam, this art form was traditionally performed during the flooding season. Villagers would wade waist-deep in water, skillfully maneuvering wooden puppets across the water’s surface to entertain their communities during times of rest.
Today, this uniquely Vietnamese art form has captured the imagination of audiences worldwide and earned international recognition for its charm and cultural significance.
Don’t miss the chance to witness daily live performances of water puppetry and other traditional Vietnamese music at the Viet Nam Pavilion at EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
